Low-mileage Citroën 2CV sold at record price

The Citroën 2CV was designed to be an affordable, reliable utility vehicle for farmers, labourers, and average French people. And it was.

In fact, one particular version, the California edition—called because it was a U.S.-spec model—was so reliable, it's no longer affordable: a 1965 Citroën 2CV California recently sold for a record 50,000 Euro, or $65,211.

According to PreWarCar.com, the total after auction fees was 59,600 Euro ($77,732). Wow.

To be fair, this was one pristine "Ugly Duckling." It was bought new by famous collector Bill Harrah and stored in a museum-like state for about 40 years.

Then the current owner seller picked it up and logged about 186 kilometres (116 miles) on the thing. Still looks new, though.

The record-setting sale crossed the block February 3 at the Artcurial Retromobile auction in Paris, France.
