Man sticks with "NO TAGS" for 25 years
Over the last 25 years, Danny White of Washington, D.C. has been stuck with over $20,000 in traffic tickets.
His only crime? His sense of humour.
White collected the fines not for committing any sort of parking infraction, but because his licence plates read "NO TAGS," reports Jalopnik.
Any time a police officer tickets a car in D.C. for a missing plate and writes "NO TAGS" in the licence-plate box, White gets stuck with a $300, $500 or $700 fine. For him, it's a costly clerical error.
White drives a Chevrolet Avalanche, so any tickets levied against Fords, Dodges or other makes are easily dismissed (he just shows up in court once every few months to clear the backlog). But when a Chevrolet is ticketed, White has a hard time proving it's not his vehicle.
It's got to the point he can't re-register his truck any more.
The district's Department of Motor Vehicles is phasing in a new protocol that requires parking enforcement officers to write part of the car's VIN in the licence plate box if the tags are missing, which should resolve the issue.
Either that or they're planning to recall any and all confusing vanity plates, like White's.
Why hasn't White switched out the ticket-magnet for a less-confusing plate? "If you pay for it, I'll change them," he says.
