Scammer took $10,000 for a car, but never delivered

Dustin Stone, 21, was recently swindled out of $10,000 trying to buy a used car off Kijiji, QMI reports.

He thought he was getting an incredible deal on a 2011 Ford Focus. The scam artist said he inherited the car when his grandmother died and wanted to sell it quick to settle some debts.

Stone used all of his savings as well as $3,000 borrowed from his mother.

He checked out the car, and everything seemed good. When they met to do the deal, the scammer gave Stone the keys and asked to count the money while Stone filled out the paperwork. But, the scammer produced a second set of keys and took off with the car and the money.

"I thought I did everything right, checked out the VIN number, got a car proof done," he told QMI. "I guess if something seems too good to be true, it probably is."

The RCMP is on the case and are warning people to be cautious when making large cash transactions.
