Ram will offer a 3.0-litre EcoDiesel in its 2014 Ram 1500, the automaker announced February 14, becoming the only light-duty pickup in the industry with a diesel option.

Chrysler says the 2014 Ram's turbo-diesel V6, when paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, should earn it best-in-class fuel economy, a title the 2013 Ram already owns.

The engine, made by VM Motori, should also offer best-in-class torque.

“Truck owners have been emphatically asking for it, and Ram will be the only manufacturer to offer a diesel powertrain in the half-ton segment with the 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel,” said Fred Diaz, president and CEO of Chrysler's Ram Truck brand.

The 2013 Ram 1500 currently offers an average 7.8L/100 km (36 mpg) fuel efficiency rating.
