"Falcon-door" Model X due 2015
Upstart electric car-maker Tesla Motors is "between models" right now.
They just ended production on their first, the Roadster, and are gearing up to launch their second, the Model S sedan.
But that didn't stop them from unveiling their third vehicle February 9, the Model X SUV-crossover, reports CNN.
The Model X, which is based on the same platform as the Model S, is a fully electric plug-in with three rows of seats and – get this – rear "falcon doors" that open upward.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk says the feature, installed for practicality, gives the Model X the largest door opening of any passenger vehicle.
The crossover will be made available in two- or four-wheel-drive, says Tesla, and should nab zero-to-100 km/h in about 4.4 seconds.
Expect it to cost about the same as a Model S, between $60,000 and $100,000, when the Model X comes out in 2014.
Don't expect the rearview-cameras-in-place-of-side-mirrors, though. Tesla's still looking at whether that's legal.
