Rise in cars means jump in road maintenance
An old myth says there are so many cars in Los Angeles that if they all stopped moving at once, there wouldn't be enough space to park them all.
I don't think I believe that. Not about L.A., anyway. Might be true in Newfoundland and Labrador, though.
There are actually more vehicles registered in the province than there are residents, according to the CBC. As of 2010, there were 633,000 cars and trucks on the roads, and only 500,000 Newfoundlanders.
Why so many cars? One resident the CBC interviewed pointed to a crappy transit system that takes too much time to get anywhere.
Whatever the reason, the cars are costing the province quite a bit in road maintenance, apparently. Public works officials say wear-and-tear is keeping road crews busy.
