OnStar to debut in-dash video calling
If you're not quite sure what do with your in-dash monitor on trips when you don't need GPS or aren't backing up — why not use it to start a video chat?
General Motors' OnStar emergency response service is going the infotainment route; they're currently testing new 4G video-streaming and video call capabilities in their Chevy Volt testbed, reports Gizmodo.
Don't start fretting over driver distraction, though: the service only works when the car is in park.
The system will apparently run off a 4G modem built in to the car, not your mobile device's wireless network. No word on pricing or who the carrier'll be, but Gizmodo's betting on Verizon.
Occupants of the rear seats will be able to take advantage of the video streaming, too, thanks to a pair of built-in tablet devices just for them.
Talking to someone via video in your car? That's some George Jetson stuff right there. The future is here.
